The Porn Industry and Insurance – How Do They Correlate?
It may be April Fool’s Day, but we are in no way pulling your leg – this blog is actually about insuring the porn industry. How saucy and modern of us!
So what does it look like? Not the adult entertainment (you dirty bird!), the insurance part! What does that look like? Thanks for asking, we’ve been dying to share this with you!
And we know we share about home, business, life, and auto insurance…but the term, “check under the hood” is going to take a whole new meaning after this blog.

The Performers:
Many stars in the industry don’t have health insurance as an added benefit to their paycheck. Most performers are viewed as freelance or contract workers, so they don’t have the same luxury as the part time barista at Starbucks, or any other employee who is granted health insurance with their, ahem, position. (Sorry, had to!)
Now, a lack of health insurance among performers should not be confused with them being “unhealthy”; many put their health, and especially their sexual health, very high on their list of priorities. However, the issue begs to be answered, what do you do as the producer in this instance? Well, if you want to do a solid for the industry, you would purchase insurance to cover your performers’ health for the duration of the project you’re working on. It’s as simple as that!

The Set and Crew:
When a film is being produced it is a necessity for the producers to purchase coverage for any project being done. I could go on and on about that, but we’ve already written a blog with everything you’d need to know about that here.

Distribution:
This one is a biggie! When you hire performers for your project, you will need to be explicit (not in that way!) about where the film is going to be posted and how it is going to be distributed. Check out this article about how dozens of women sued a porn biz in California for 12.7 million dollars after they mislead the performers about where and how their work would be shared.
A way to cover yourself is to one, be truthful; but you should also get business insurance to cover you in the event of a lawsuit or any other legal filings taken against you and your business.

Hopefully you gained some insight into the world of porn and insurance through this blog. We’ll be back next week with another tidbit of insurance information for you, although it will be much less risqué, sorry!
